Herring's family described him as someone who struggled to escape the dangerous influences of his surroundings.
Herring's death highlighted the pervasive gun violence in Chicago, where community members often find themselves trapped by circumstances beyond their control. His father recalled their shared fears about the risks of street violence, as the family tried to deter Herring from getting caught up in dangerous situations. Despite having a few minor arrests, he was never involved in major criminal activities, but association with others involved in criminal life made him vulnerable.
