On September 28, 2014, Miguel Hernandez, a 25-year-old Hispanic male, was fatally shot in the South Chicago neighborhood. The incident occurred in the 8300 block of South Houston Avenue, where Hernandez was standing with a group of people when a gunman approached and opened fire. Hernandez was struck multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene. Two other individuals were wounded in the attack but survived.
