In the summer of 1981, a promising young man named Randy Walton, a 24-year-old Black male, found his life tragically cut short in Denver, Colorado. Having recently been assigned to Lowry Air Force Base, he was just beginning a new chapter in his service to the country. On the night of June 14th, Walton and a friend attended an after-hours party at a community center on Fairfax Street.
Later, as they sat in a parked car, the night took a dark and violent turn.
Three unknown men approached the vehicle with ill intent. The friendly atmosphere of the party was shattered as the men proceeded to rob Walton and his friend. During the course of this brazen robbery, one of the assailants produced a firearm and fatally shot Randy Walton. The perpetrators then fled the scene, leaving behind a senseless act of violence that would remain unresolved for decades to come.
Despite the immediate launch of an investigation by the Denver Police Department, the identities of the three men responsible for Randy Walton's death have never been discovered. No arrests have ever been made in the case, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The case eventually went cold, but it has not been forgotten. The Denver Police Department's Cold Case Unit continues to seek information from the public that might lead to a breakthrough. The murder of Randy Walton remains a painful open wound for his loved ones, a story without a final chapter, and a stark reminder of a life taken far too soon.
