On the Fourth of July in 1985, a day meant for celebration, tragedy struck a Denver family. James Thompson, a 62-year-old Black male, was enjoying the holiday on his patio in the 2600 block of Dexter Street. It was a festive atmosphere, with the sounds of Independence Day activities filling the air. Suddenly, a bullet pierced through the patio cover, striking and killing Mr. Thompson. The shocking and seemingly random nature of the event left a lasting scar on the community.
