In a tragic case of child abuse, a young boy named Lucas lost his life. Medical examinations following his death revealed a horrifying extent of his injuries. Doctors who treated him at the hospital determined that he was in traumatic shock from multiple abdominal organ injuries. A CT scan showed that his liver had been almost split in two, leading to significant blood loss. This blood loss, in turn, caused cardiac arrest, brain damage, and ultimately, his death.
The treating physician concluded that Lucas was a victim of child abuse.
Further investigation by a pathologist during an autopsy uncovered widespread bruising on his scalp, brain, liver, pancreas, stomach, lungs, groin, and testicles. The pathologist identified three major areas of trauma: his head, trunk, and genitals, and concluded that his death was a homicide. A neuropathologist who examined Lucas's brain found evidence of subdural and 'shearing' hemorrhages, which were believed to be the result of direct head trauma. Both the pathologist and the neuropathologist agreed that a significant amount of force would have been required to cause the head injuries he sustained.
The investigation into Lucas's death led to charges against a man named Gross. During legal proceedings, it was revealed that Gross had a history of physically abusing the sons of two of his previous girlfriends. Initially, the boy's mother, Amy, had told police she saw Gross hit Lucas. However, after Gross was charged, she recanted her statement. In a later statement to the police, Amy claimed that while Lucas was being treated for his injuries, Gross suggested that she should tell the authorities that she might have hit Lucas with her car. Approximately a week after his initial interview with the police, while in custody for another matter, Gross requested to make another statement. In this interview, he told police that he had seen Amy strike Lucas.
