In the early morning hours of New Year's Day 2007, the life of 24-year-old Darrent Demarcus Williams, a promising African-American male cornerback for the Denver Broncos, was tragically cut short in a drive-by shooting in downtown Denver. The incident occurred at approximately 2:10 AM, less than 12 hours after Williams had played in the final game of the Broncos' season.
Williams was riding in a rented stretch Hummer limousine with several other people, including teammate Javon Walker, when another vehicle pulled alongside and opened fire. A single gunshot wound to the neck killed Williams almost instantly, and he died in Walker's arms.
The shooting followed a confrontation at a nightclub called Shelter, where Williams and his friends had been attending a New Year's Eve and birthday party for Denver Nuggets player Kenyon Martin. An altercation broke out between members of Williams's group and other patrons, reportedly including members of the Crips street gang. Witnesses stated that Williams was not directly involved in the initial dispute but was attempting to act as a peacemaker. The conflict, however, escalated outside the club, leading to the fatal shooting moments after Williams and his party departed in the limousine.
The investigation quickly centered on a group of gang members. A vehicle registered to Brian Hicks, a known Crips gang member who was incarcerated at the time, was impounded in connection with the shooting. Four days after the murder, police arrested Willie D. Clark on a parole violation, naming him a person of interest. Clark, a member of the Tre Tre Crips, was indicted on first-degree murder charges in October 2008. Prosecutors argued that Clark became enraged after a dispute at the nightclub and followed the limousine, firing at least 15 shots into the vehicle.
In March 2010, after an 11-day trial during which several witnesses testified against him, Willie Clark was found guilty of the murder of Darrent Williams. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 1,152 years. While Clark was the man convicted of pulling the trigger, the investigation also looked into other individuals. Brian Hicks and another man, Vernon Edwards, were considered persons of interest, and both were connected to a larger federal drug investigation involving the local Crips gangs. Hicks was also later indicted, along with Clark, for the murder of a witness in a separate case.
