Keyru Mustafa Lolo, a 24-year-old Black male, had moved to the city only five months prior to be closer to his extended family and to work, with aspirations of returning to his college studies. Originally from Ethiopia, his family had immigrated to the United States about 15 years earlier.
He was known by his loved ones as a friendly and vibrant individual without any known enemies, making the events of October 16, 2009, all the more perplexing and tragic for those who knew him.
On that Friday evening, at approximately 8:57 p.m., the sound of multiple gunshots echoed through the courtyard of the Garden Court apartments, located on the 1100 block of Syracuse Street. Keyru was visiting several relatives who lived in the complex. According to reports, he received a phone call, left his cousin's apartment, and was shot multiple times as he crossed the courtyard. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found Keyru with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Denver Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His family, many of whom lived in the same apartment complex, were unaware that their own cousin was the victim until police showed them his picture hours later.
The investigation into Keyru's murder began immediately, with the Denver Police Department launching a full-scale effort to uncover the truth behind what they described as a 'pretty brutal shooting.' Detectives canvassed the apartment complex, questioning residents in the hopes of finding witnesses who might have seen or heard something crucial. Despite the numerous balconies overlooking the courtyard, no one came forward with useful information. In the days and weeks that followed, Keyru's family and members of Denver's Ethiopian community joined forces with the police to distribute flyers in the neighborhood, desperate for any lead that might bring his killer to justice. A reward for information leading to an arrest was eventually increased to $10,000, and a billboard was put up near the scene of the crime asking, 'Who Killed Keyru Lolo?'
Despite these efforts and the passage of time, the case has grown cold. To this day, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in the shooting death of Keyru Mustafa Lolo.
