In the fall of 2015, the life of 28-year-old Isaiah Roquemore was cut short in a sudden act of violence in Denver, Colorado. On the evening of October 15th, Roquemore was inside an apartment in the 7100 block of East Mississippi Avenue with another man, Virgil Robinson. The two were reportedly watching a football game with a third individual they knew as Najib Abdinasir Mahamoud. Without warning, Mahamoud opened fire with a shotgun, striking both Roquemore and Robinson.
Emergency services responded to reports of a shooting at the Spyglass Hill Apartments around 7:30 p.m. They discovered both victims suffering from gunshot wounds to the torso. They were rushed to a nearby hospital, but Isaiah Roquemore was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner later confirmed his cause of death was a gunshot wound. Robinson, the second victim, was left in critical condition but survived the attack.
In the immediate aftermath, Denver police identified Najib Mahamoud as the suspect and a manhunt ensued. Information came to light that Mahamoud was already known to law enforcement. He had been arrested in connection with a violent kidnapping and stabbing incident the previous year but was released on a reduced bond. The charges in that earlier case were eventually dropped because the victim could not be located, a circumstance that left Mahamoud free on the day of Roquemore's death.
After the shooting, Mahamoud fled the state. He was located and arrested in Minnesota in November 2015 and extradited back to Denver to face charges for the murder of Isaiah Roquemore. In January 2019, a jury found Najib Mahamoud guilty of first-degree murder. The following month, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He received an additional consecutive sentence of 48 years for the shooting of Virgil Robinson and another three years for the felony menacing of a third individual, Mario Jones, who was also present during the incident.
