In the winter of 2015, the life of Paul Randy Rael, a 43-year-old male, was cut short in a burst of violence in Albuquerque, New Mexico. On the evening of February 1st, a confrontation that had been brewing for days reached its tragic conclusion. The dispute reportedly began several days earlier over a mere $30 drug debt, during which an acquaintance of Rael's was involved in a physical altercation with another man.
On that fateful Sunday, the man from the initial dispute, Jason L.,
returned to Rael's home, but this time he was not alone. Accompanied by two armed companions, he arrived to find Rael, his stepson, and his son outside on the porch, while his wife and ten-year-old granddaughter were inside the house. The situation quickly escalated as gunfire erupted from the sidewalk where the three men stood. In the hail of bullets, Paul Randy Rael was struck in the neck and fatally wounded. His son was shot in the head and his stepson was hit in the leg; both survived their injuries. The two females inside the home were not physically harmed.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of Jason L. He was subsequently charged with a multitude of offenses related to the incident. A jury later convicted him of first-degree felony murder and second-degree murder for the death of Paul Randy Rael. His convictions also included four counts of aggravated battery for the injuries sustained by Rael's sons, two counts of aggravated assault, multiple conspiracy counts, child abuse, and shooting at a dwelling. For his role in the death of Paul Randy Rael, the court sentenced him to life in prison.
