On September 26, 1993, Detective John James Mulligan, a 27-year veteran of the Boston Police Department, was shot and killed in the line of duty. The incident occurred in the parking lot of a Walgreens drugstore located on American Legion Highway in the Roslindale section of Boston. Mulligan, who was 52 years old at the time of his death, was found slumped in his Ford Explorer by a Walgreens employee at approximately 3:30 a.m..
