In the late hours of March 26, 2016, a young Hispanic man's life was cut short in Springfield, Massachusetts. Jeffrey Souza Freitas, a 20-year-old resident of nearby Ludlow, was found deceased inside a vehicle in the city's North End neighborhood around 11:15 p.m.. An investigation quickly determined that his death was not a random act of violence, but rather the result of a shooting that authorities believed was connected to a drug-related incident.
The investigation into Jeffrey's
death led to the identification and arrest of multiple suspects. One of the individuals charged in connection with the homicide was Matthew Hastings, who was 17 years old at the time of the incident. He was arraigned on a charge of murder and initially held without bail. Another suspect, Charles Sierra, was also arrested and faced charges for his role in the killing.
Prosecutors laid out a narrative of a plan among three individuals to purchase marijuana from Freitas, a transaction that ultimately turned fatal. It was during this botched drug deal that Freitas was shot in the head while in his car and left for dead. The charge of murder by joint venture against Hastings suggested that investigators believed it was a collaborative effort that resulted in the fatal shooting.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, both Hastings and Sierra took plea deals. Matthew Hastings pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to seven to 10 years in prison. Charles Sierra, who was 18 at the time of his plea, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and other charges. He received a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 15 years. A third suspect was also mentioned as awaiting trial. Jeffrey Freitas, described as a polite and kind-hearted young man who was a beloved son, brother, and proud godfather, was remembered by his family as a joy to be around.
