In the early hours of October 12, 2022, the life of 32-year-old Andre Yarns Jr., a Black/African American man from Springfield, Massachusetts, was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. The incident, which also claimed the life of 32-year-old Justice Kirkland, unfolded in the Indian Orchard neighborhood of Springfield, marking the city's first double homicide in nearly a year. Responding to reports of shots fired on Main Street shortly after 4 a.m., police discovered a grim scene.
One of the men was pronounced dead at the location, while the other was rushed to Baystate Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Andre Yarns Jr. was a graduate of Central High School and Holyoke Community College. His death left a void in the lives of his family and friends. In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement officials were quick to assure the public that they did not believe there was an ongoing threat, characterizing the deadly assault as a targeted shooting. The Hampden District Attorney's Office, along with the Springfield Police Department's Homicide Unit, launched an investigation into the killings, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the apprehension of those responsible.
As investigators delved into the case, a connection to a man from Vermont emerged. Chongtoua Yee, of Burlington, Vermont, was arrested and faced federal charges for his alleged role in illegally purchasing a firearm. According to federal prosecutors, Yee acted as a "straw purchaser," buying a 9mm pistol in Vermont in August 2022. Investigators allege that this same firearm was found at the scene of the double homicide in Springfield. Court documents revealed that Yee had allegedly purchased the gun for Andre Yarns Jr., who accompanied him to the firearms dealer. Text messages between the two reportedly indicated that Yarns had provided the money for the purchase and took possession of the gun shortly after it was bought. Less than two months later, that same weapon was linked to the fatal shooting.
While the arrest of Chongtoua Yee shed light on the origin of one of the weapons involved, the individuals who carried out the shooting of Andre Yarns Jr. and Justice Kirkland remain at large. As of late 2022, the investigation into the double murder was described as ongoing, with law enforcement actively pursuing suspects. However, to date, no arrests have been publicly announced in direct connection with the murders. The case stands as a somber reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence, leaving a family to mourn the loss of a son, father, and friend, while the quest for justice for his death continues.
