On February 1, 2016, Edward Flowers, a 42-year-old Black male, was fatally shot inside a social club located in the 500 block of South Cicero Avenue in Chicago's Austin neighborhood. The incident occurred during a confrontation between Flowers and another man, 33-year-old James Green. According to prosecutors, after being punched by Flowers, Green retrieved a firearm and shot him. Even after Flowers fell to the floor, Green allegedly approached and fired another shot at close range. The shooting was witnessed by multiple individuals present in the club, and surveillance footage captured the event.
Following the incident, an arrest warrant was issued for James Green in late February 2016. He was apprehended in March in Madison, Wisconsin, where he was found in possession of a firearm. Green was extradited to Illinois to face charges. At the time of his arrest, Green had prior convictions for aggravated battery and aggravated discharge of a firearm. He was held on a $2 million bail.
