In the early morning hours of January 13, 2012, the quiet of Mount Ayr, Iowa, was shattered by a 911 call from a juvenile reporting a domestic dispute. When deputies from the Ringgold County Sheriff's Office arrived at the residence at 2339 – 280th Street, they discovered the body of 45-year-old Lori Yeager, a White female. She was the victim of an apparent homicide, having been fatally shot.
The immediate suspect in Yeager's death was identified as 40-year-old Robert Taylor, who lived with her. An active arrest warrant for first-degree murder was promptly issued for Taylor, but he had fled the scene before law enforcement's arrival. A search for Taylor and his copper-colored 2008 Ford F350 Super Duty truck ensued.
Later that same day, the search for Robert Taylor came to a grim conclusion. His vehicle was discovered alongside northbound I-29 in Fremont County. Inside, law enforcement found a man matching Taylor's description, deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A Fremont County deputy had spotted the pickup and, upon approaching the vehicle, the man inside opened the door, faced the deputy, and shot himself. Authorities later confirmed the deceased individual was indeed Robert Taylor. The investigation concluded that Taylor was the perpetrator of Lori Yeager's murder, which was classified as a result of domestic violence.
