On November 2, 2016, Patrolman Justin Scott Martin, a 24-year-old officer with the Urbandale Police Department, was tragically killed in an ambush-style shooting. The incident occurred shortly after 1:00 a.m. in Urbandale, Iowa, which is approximately 7.5 miles northwest of Des Moines. Martin was found dead in his patrol car after officers responded to a report of shots being fired at around 1:06 a.m. The crime scene was located near an intersection close to Urbandale High School.
