On the morning of June 1, 2016, 16-year-old Hispanic male Victor Felix was fatally shot in Chicago's West Elsdon neighborhood while walking to school. Known affectionately as “Baby Vic,” Victor was a sophomore at John Hancock College Prep High School. Standing 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing 200 pounds, he was an aspiring athlete who played basketball and softball, with dreams of continuing in college.
That day, after being dropped off at school by his grandmother, Victor agreed to accompany two friends to a nearby store. Around 8:40 a.m., as they returned near the intersection of 56th Street and Keeler Avenue, a brown Buick approached. An individual exited the vehicle and opened fire. Victor was struck multiple times, while his friends escaped unharmed. He was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead shortly after.
The shooting sent shockwaves through the community. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing two boys running, followed by Victor lying on the ground. Neighbors expressed fear and disbelief, noting that while some gang activity existed in the area, such violence was uncommon. Victor's family and friends described him as a good-natured individual, deeply loved by those around him. His grandfather, Angel Morales, emphasized that Victor had no known gang affiliations and speculated that he may have been targeted due to his size.
In the aftermath, Victor's mother, Nanette Luna, became an advocate for justice, joining support groups like Families Seeking Justice and Parents for Peace and Justice. She has spoken publicly about her son's death, participated in anti-violence rallies, and reached out to law enforcement and city officials seeking answers. Despite her efforts, no arrests have been made, and the case remains unsolved. Luna keeps an altar for Victor in her home, surrounded by his favorite items, as a tribute to his memory.
Community organizations, including Cook County Crime Stoppers, have continued to seek information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for Victor's death. Despite these efforts, the perpetrator remains at large, and Victor's family continues to seek justice for their son.
