In the late hours of a summer night in Magnolia, Arkansas, a burst of senseless violence tragically cut short the life of Brandon Hobdy, a 23-year-old male. The fatal shooting occurred in the early morning of August 24, 2014, outside the Veterans of Foreign Wars building. Hobdy, a promising senior wide receiver for the Southern Arkansas University football team, was an innocent bystander at what was described as a back-to-school party not affiliated with the university.
The events
leading to the shooting began with a disturbance inside the VFW, which resulted in several individuals being removed from the party. These individuals later returned in a vehicle and began shooting indiscriminately into the crowd gathered outside. In the chaotic moments that followed, both Brandon Hobdy and another man, 24-year-old Wayne Payton, a former student of the university, were struck by the gunfire. Neither man was believed to have been the intended target of the shooters.
The investigation into the double homicide led to the arrest of 20-year-old Byron Lavell Dunn of Magnolia. In April 2016, Dunn pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree murder in connection with Hobdy's death. As part of a plea agreement, an initial charge of capital murder was reduced, and he was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Another suspect, Timothy Jamarcus Johnson, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Wayne Payton. He later pleaded no contest to a lesser charge of terroristic threatening.
