Lavaris Johnson, age 30, was fatally shot on December 16, 2016, in the Lawndale neighborhood on Chicago's West Side. The incident occurred early in the morning, adding to the already high tally of homicides for the year in Chicago. The city had experienced a significant surge in gun violence throughout 2016, with Lavaris's death being one of nearly 800 homicides that year. The escalation in violence in 2016 made it the deadliest year in Chicago in almost two decades.
