In the early morning hours of April 27, 1992, Harold Drury, a 52-year-old Caucasian male, was working his shift as a clerk at an AM-PM convenience store in Phoenix, Arizona. A United States Air Force veteran, he was a dedicated family man. Tragically, his life was cut short in a senseless act of violence.
Around 1:00 a.m., a man named Chad Lee, who was 19 at the time, entered the store with the intention of robbing it. He approached the counter to buy cigarettes.
As Harold opened the cash register, Lee brandished a revolver and shot him multiple times in the shoulder, head, and neck. After Harold collapsed behind the counter, Lee stole the entire cash drawer and fled the scene. His 14-year-old accomplice, Scott Hunt, was waiting for him in a car outside.
Following the murder, Lee and Hunt attempted to cover their tracks by dismantling the revolver and discarding its parts in a nearby dumpster. They also tried to dispose of the cash drawer in a creek bed. Their crime spree, however, was not limited to this single act; it also included the robbery and murder of a taxi driver and the kidnapping, sexual assault, and murder of a pizza delivery woman that same month.
The investigation into Harold Drury's death led authorities to Lee and Hunt. During police interviews, Lee confessed to the robbery and murder, providing details that matched the evidence investigators had collected, including the locations of the discarded weapon and cash drawer. Both Chad Lee and Scott Hunt were arrested. Lee was convicted of first-degree murder and armed robbery. For his series of violent crimes, he received a death sentence. Due to his age, Scott Hunt was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the crimes.
