In the early hours of January 21, 2017, Armani A. Pickett, a 20-year-old Black male, was gunned down on a winter night in Humboldt Park on Chicago's West Side.
Police were called to the 3900 block of West Thomas Street around 3:15 a.m. and found chaos settling into silence: two men sprawled in the street with gunshot wounds to the head, and the 20-year-old victim, who would not survive.

Pickett was pronounced dead on scene at 4:05 a.m., a life ended before dawn and before his twenties could properly begin.
Armani A. Pickett had lived in the 5700 block of North Talman.
That night's gunfire did not stop with him.
A 36-year-old man was rushed to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, while a 42-year-old man, hit in the arm, arrived at Norwegian American Hospital in better shape.
The West Side street marked the boundary between what had been and what would never be for the 20-year-old, victim whose name would soon appear in memorial rolls and weekend tallies.
Detectives said the attack appeared gang-related, a familiar refrain in a neighborhood where such suspicions often shadow sudden violence.
Area North investigators took the case, but in those first reports there were no descriptions of a gunman, no mention of a getaway car that someone might remember later, only the assertion of motive and the start of a file.
For 20-year-old victim, Amani A. Pickett, who was at the center of it, there was the finality of an on-scene pronouncement of death and the promise of an inquiry that, at least publicly, named no suspect.
