On what was meant to be a day of gratitude, Thanksgiving Day turned into a scene of tragedy in Bainbridge, Georgia, for 19-year-old Tyiun Adams and his mother. The young man, a Black senior at Bainbridge High School with plans to become a truck driver after his upcoming graduation, was shot and killed in his home. His life was cut short alongside his 36-year-old mother, Shendora Adams, in a violent act that stemmed from a history of domestic disputes.
The incident unfolded on the morning of November 28, 2024, when Shendora's 36-year-old ex-boyfriend, Jamar Calloway, broke into their residence. There had been a documented history of domestic incidents between Calloway and Shendora Adams, and she had even obtained a restraining order against him. Tyiun, who had previously stepped in to protect his mother during disputes, once again tried to defend her. Tragically, both he and his mother were fatally shot by Calloway.
After the shooting, Jamar Calloway fled the scene, driving to Ocala, Florida. Later that same day, in the parking lot of a recreation center, Calloway took his own life. The investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified Calloway as the suspect in the double homicide, but his death brought an end to the criminal case. The community was left to mourn the loss of a mother and her teenage son, victims of a domestic violence cycle that ended in a murder-suicide.
