On March 23, 2023, 17-year-old Ladarius Jackson of Athens, Texas, was fatally shot during a botched firearm transaction at the Royal Crest Apartments in Tyler. Jackson and his associate, 19-year-old Donovan Dodd, had arranged to meet with Aaron Johnson, 20, to trade a Springfield XD 9mm pistol and $400 for an AR-15 rifle. The meeting, however, devolved into a violent confrontation.
