On April 10, 2023, 23-year-old Houston resident Samuel Jose Mata was fatally shot while driving his pickup truck on the East Sam Houston Parkway. His passenger, 22-year-old Jose Paredes, who had been a close friend since elementary school, was arrested at the scene and charged with his murder.
The incident occurred around 8 a.m. Deputies observed Mata's truck veering erratically before it collided with a concrete barrier.
Upon approaching the vehicle, they found Paredes armed with a pistol. After he surrendered, authorities discovered Mata had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
Investigations revealed that Mata and Paredes had spent the previous night socializing, visiting a bar and a house party. For reasons yet to be determined, Paredes allegedly fired two shots at Mata while he was driving. Paredes later claimed to have no recollection of the events leading up to the shooting.
Following his arrest, Paredes was charged with murder. His initial bond was set at $250,000, which he posted, leading to his release. However, due to his status as a non-U.S. citizen from Mexico, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained him shortly thereafter. Subsequently, his bond was increased to $500,000.
Mata's family expressed profound grief and shock, particularly given the longstanding friendship between the two men. They described Mata as a kind-hearted individual who was generous and deeply loved by his family and friends. The family also voiced concerns over Paredes' release on bond, fearing he might flee the area.
As the legal process unfolds, the family continues to seek justice for Mata, while the community mourns the loss of a young man remembered for his loving nature and vibrant spirit.
