On the evening of July 4, 2017, Tyrone Burdine, a 56-year-old African-American male, was fatally shot while celebrating the holiday with neighbors in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago. At approximately 8:15 p.m., as Burdine stood in front of a home on the 1600 block of North Major Avenue, gunfire erupted from a passing vehicle. A bullet struck Burdine in the head, and he was transported to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after midnight on
July 5.
The shooting was part of a broader outbreak of violence over the Fourth of July weekend, during which 102 people were shot in Chicago, 15 of them fatally. Burdine was among those killed in what authorities described as one of the most violent holiday weekends in the city’s recent history.
According to prosecutors, the incident stemmed from an earlier dispute involving a stolen bicycle. Devin Sanders, a 17-year-old male and reputed member of the P-block faction of the Four Corner Hustlers gang, confronted a 19-year-old man at a neighborhood White Castle, accusing him of stealing his sister’s bike. After a verbal altercation, Sanders and his associate, 18-year-old Darius Coakley, pursued the 19-year-old and his 12-year-old cousin in a Volkswagen. Later, as the two victims walked through an alley, Sanders allegedly leaned out of the car's passenger window and opened fire. The 19-year-old was shot in the back, and Burdine, an uninvolved bystander, was struck in the head during the gunfire.
Both Sanders and Coakley were arrested and charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder. Sanders was held without bond, with the presiding judge citing him as a danger to society. Coakley, identified as the driver of the vehicle, was also held without bond.
