On June 25, 2023, at approximately 7 a.m., 32-year-old Dashawn L. Rankin was fatally shot while riding his bicycle on Federal Street near West North Avenue in Pittsburgh's North Side. According to Pittsburgh police, Rankin had a brief verbal exchange with a man on foot before continuing to ride away. Moments later, the assailant followed Rankin, produced a firearm, and shot him once in the back.
Emergency responders found Rankin in critical condition; he was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
The investigation utilized surveillance footage from the vicinity, which captured interactions between Rankin and the suspect before, during, and after the shooting. This footage was instrumental in identifying the suspect as 56-year-old Medford Taylor. An arrest warrant was issued for Taylor on September 6, 2023, charging him with criminal homicide and firearms violations. Authorities apprehended Taylor in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 18, 2024. He is currently undergoing extradition procedures to Pittsburgh to face the charges.
Further investigation into Taylor's background revealed a history of criminal activity, including a felony aggravated assault charge in 2022, a misdemeanor simple assault charge in 2011, and a misdemeanor charge for making terroristic threats in 2010. These prior offenses contributed to the charges against him in Rankin's death, particularly concerning firearm possession violations.
Rankin's family and the Pittsburgh community have been deeply affected by his untimely death. Family members remember him as a devoted father of three, a loving individual with an endearing personality, and someone who was always willing to help others. His aunt, Janice Austin, expressed relief upon learning of Taylor's arrest, stating, "Whatever took place, I'm just glad they got him. Just let justice take care of that because I'm not here to judge him."
The case has underscored concerns about gun violence in Pittsburgh, particularly incidents occurring in broad daylight in public spaces. Community members and local businesses in the North Side area have expressed apprehension about safety and the potential impact on local commerce.
