In the Hill District of Pittsburgh, a neighborhood with a rich history, 68-year-old Lawrence Kelley Jr. was a familiar and beloved figure. Known affectionately as 'Larry,' 'Leroy,' or 'Lovebug,' he was a man of many talents and a friendly face to many. Growing up in Hazelwood, he was known as the 'Best Detailed Car Washer' in the area. Over the years, he had worked at the Homestead Steel Mill, managed a Vocelli's Pizza, and most recently, served the community at the Jubilee Kitchen.
On
the warm evening of Saturday, August 31, 2024, tragedy struck. Near the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Marion Street, on the border of the Crawford-Roberts and Bluff neighborhoods, an altercation broke out. In the ensuing violence, shots were fired, and when the chaos subsided, three people were found lying in the street with gunshot wounds.
Lawrence Kelley Jr. was one of the victims. He was rushed to a local hospital in grave condition but sadly succumbed to his injuries. A man and a woman were also critically injured in the shooting and were taken into surgery. Witnesses reported seeing a lone male suspect flee the scene on foot, heading north on Vine Street toward Colwell Street.
The news of Kelley's death sent shockwaves through the community. He was remembered as a ladies' man in his younger years and a dedicated worker. He is survived by his mother, his son, three brothers, a sister, and several grandchildren.
