On April 22, 2023, 21-year-old Beatrice Annemarie "Maxine" Knights tragically lost her life during a mass shooting at Happy Hill Park in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. during a large gathering at the park's pavilion, which was attended by over 200 people. Multiple individuals began discharging firearms into the crowd, resulting in five people being shot.
Beatrice was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other four victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Beatrice was a devoted mother to her 19-month-old daughter and worked as a nurse's aide. She had aspirations to further her career in the medical field by pursuing a medical assistant certification and also dreamed of starting her own beauty product business. Her family and friends remember her as a loving individual who cherished spending time with her daughter and had a passion for dancing and modeling.
In the wake of this tragedy, Beatrice's family organized a memorial service to honor her memory. A funeral service was held on May 5, 2023, at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Greensboro, North Carolina. The family also set up a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs of the funeral and to support Beatrice's young daughter.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and the identities of any suspects remain unknown. The Winston-Salem Police Department continues to investigate the incident and has urged anyone with information to come forward. Beatrice's family has also appealed to the community for assistance, emphasizing the importance of justice for their beloved daughter and the need to prevent such tragedies from affecting other families.
