On September 28, 2023, Greensboro police responded to a report of a body found in a wooded area near the 1300 block of South Elm-Eugene Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered human remains in an advanced state of decomposition, rendering immediate identification impossible.
The following day, September 29, the Greensboro Behavioral Health Response Team received a missing person's report from the family of 39-year-old Roussou Kason Cheek.
Family members indicated that Cheek was last known to be living in a tent near the location where the body was discovered.
On October 3, the North Carolina Medical Examiner identified the deceased as Roussou Cheek and determined the cause of death to be homicide due to multiple gunshot wounds. The Greensboro Police Department subsequently initiated a homicide investigation.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with Cheek's death. The Greensboro Police Department continues to investigate the case and has urged anyone with information to contact Greensboro/Guilford Crime Stoppers at (336) 373-1000.
In the wake of his passing, family and friends have held vigils to honor Cheek's memory, remembering him as a caring individual who was always willing to help others. He is survived by a 16-year-old daughter.
