On a Sunday evening in Atlanta, Georgia, the life of Demetrius Terrell, a 39-year-old Black / African American male, was tragically cut short. On September 25, 2011, what began as an attempted armed robbery escalated into a fatal series of events that would also claim the life of his passenger.
The incident unfolded in southwest Atlanta when armed individuals approached Terrell’s vehicle on Susan Lane in an attempt to rob him. In a desperate bid to escape, Terrell sped away from his assailants. However, in the ensuing moments, he was shot. The gunshot wound likely proved to be the fatal injury. Despite being wounded, Terrell continued to flee, a decision that led to a second tragedy.
Approximately a third of a mile from where the encounter began, at the intersection of Campbellton and Barge roads, Terrell's SUV crashed head-on into a MARTA bus. The impact of the collision was severe. Terrell was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. His passenger, an Atlanta Police Department 911 dispatcher, was found deceased at the scene of the crash due to injuries sustained in the accident. A 13-year-old boy, the dispatcher's son, was in the backseat of the SUV and witnessed the harrowing events.
In the immediate aftermath, the Atlanta Police Department launched an investigation into the dual tragedy. A reward was offered for any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects responsible for the attempted robbery and the subsequent deaths. However, in the years that have followed, there have been no publicly reported arrests or identification of any suspects in connection with the death of Demetrius Terrell.
