In the early hours of a Sunday morning in September 2013, a sense of normalcy was shattered by an act of sudden violence in northeast Atlanta. Derrick Jr. Benning, a 20-year-old male from College Park, was walking with a friend near the 400 block of Wabash Avenue. The two were on their way to a store when the unthinkable happened. At approximately 1:30 a.m., their path was silently intersected by a dark-colored Chrysler 300.
Without any warning or exchange of words, shots were fired from
the vehicle, striking Benning at least once. The abruptness of the attack left no time for reaction. His friend, who was with him, later recounted that there was barely a moment to even acknowledge the car's presence before the sound of gunfire split the night air. Emergency services were called, and Benning was rushed to Atlanta Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
In the immediate aftermath, the Atlanta Police Department began their investigation into the homicide. However, the assailant or assailants had vanished into the night, leaving behind a grieving family and a community searching for answers. Initial reports from law enforcement indicated that no immediate arrests had been made. As days turned into weeks and then years, the case grew cold. Despite appeals to the public for information and the offer of a reward for any leads that could result in an arrest and indictment, the shooting of Derrick Jr. Benning remains unsolved.
