In the Rainier Valley neighborhood of Seattle, on a late winter day, the life of a 29-year-old Black/African American woman named Fariya Fay Yusuf was tragically cut short. On March 4, 2023, what began as a conversation between friends concluded in a hail of gunfire that left Yusuf dead outside her own apartment in the 7100 block of 42nd Avenue South.
The person charged with her murder was a longtime friend, 26-year-old Jamila Abdi.
The evening's events, as pieced together by investigators, started with Abdi driving Yusuf to her home. The two women sat in the parked car for at least ten minutes, engaged in conversation. According to Abdi's later statement to police, they were discussing Yusuf's relationship with her boyfriend. After their talk, Yusuf went into her apartment. What followed was a series of texts and calls from Abdi, persistently trying to get Yusuf to come back outside so they could continue their discussion.
Persuaded by her friend's requests, Yusuf emerged from her apartment, a glass of wine in one hand and her cell phone to her ear in the other, speaking to another friend. As she walked toward Abdi, who had been waiting, Abdi allegedly brandished a gun. She is accused of firing 14 rounds at Yusuf, continuing to shoot even after her friend had fallen to the ground. Surveillance footage from the area reportedly captured the horrific incident. After the shooting, Abdi was seen driving away from the scene.
The Seattle police investigation led them to search the West Seattle home of Jamila Abdi's mother, where they found potential evidence, including pink gloves that matched those worn by the shooter in the video footage. Abdi was arrested on March 10, 2023, and subsequently charged with first-degree murder. A judge set her bail at $2 million. At her arraignment on March 23, Abdi pleaded not guilty to the charges. While the two were described as longtime friends, the motive behind the fatal shooting remained unclear to investigators.
