On a Tuesday afternoon, January 23, 2024, the life of 15-year-old Black/African American male Mobarak Adam was tragically cut short in Seattle, Washington. A student at Chief Sealth International High School, he was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the torso inside a boys' bathroom at the nearby Southwest Athletic Complex, a community building he and other teens frequented. First responders and staff attempted life-saving measures, but Mobarak succumbed to his injury at the scene.
The King County Medical Examiner's Office would later rule his death a homicide, the first in the city for 2024.
In the immediate aftermath, details were scarce. Seattle Police reported that several young people had entered the establishment with Mobarak, but they left after he was shot. These individuals, believed to be three teenage boys who were with him at the time of the shooting, have remained silent. Citing a Washington state law that requires juveniles to have access to an attorney before police questioning, they have not provided investigators with any information. This lack of witness cooperation has significantly hindered the investigation into what transpired inside the community center bathroom.
The investigation into Mobarak's death has been fraught with challenges, leaving his family and community searching for answers. A major point of contention and frustration has been the discovery that the surveillance cameras inside the city-run teen life center were not functional at the time of the shooting and had reportedly been broken for more than a year.
