On May 25, 2009, Hagos Gebreagziabher, a 41-year-old Ethiopian immigrant and store owner, was shot and killed in front of his wife outside his convenience store in Northwest Jacksonville, Florida. The incident occurred late at night as Gebreagziabher was closing the Family Food Store, located in the 2100 block of West 13th Street. Witnesses reported that shots were fired from across the street, striking Gebreagziabher, who died at the scene.
His wife, who was present at the time, was not injured but witnessed two individuals fleeing from the area.
The motive behind the shooting remains uncertain. While it is believed that the attack could have been a retaliation involving neighborhood youths with whom Gebreagziabher had previous altercations, another possible explanation was a robbery attempt. However, the victim's family confirmed that nothing appeared to have been stolen. Gebreagziabher had moved to Jacksonville from Ethiopia around 15 years earlier, with the hopes of achieving the American Dream. He opened the store in 2007 and was known by the community as a generous and hardworking individual who often helped his neighbors by offering groceries on credit when they were struggling financially.
Despite the tragedy and the community's reaction, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office continues to seek information from the public to help solve the case. First Coast Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for any information that could lead to an arrest, urging anyone with potential leads to come forward. This remains one of the many unsolved homicide cases in Jacksonville, reflecting the broader challenge of addressing violent crime in some neighborhoods across the city.
