A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded in a Kenner, Louisiana, neighborhood, claiming the life of 3-year-old Carmelo McClinton on February 28, 2024. The young boy, known affectionately as 'Melo,' was fatally shot by his father, Melvin McClinton Sr., in the throes of a deep personal crisis. The devastating chain of events was set in motion by the recent killing of McClinton Sr.'s older son, 18-year-old Melvin McClinton Jr., which had plunged the father into a state of profound emotional and mental
distress.
On that fateful evening, a heated argument erupted between McClinton Sr. and Carmelo's mother concerning the discipline of their child. The altercation escalated dramatically, culminating in McClinton Sr. arming himself. He then shot his youngest son before walking into the driveway and turning the gun on himself. When Kenner police officers arrived at the home, they discovered the toddler deceased in a bedroom from a gunshot wound.
The community and family were left to grapple with the immense loss of two young lives in such a short span of time. Family members recounted that McClinton Sr. had been visibly struggling since the murder of his namesake son just weeks prior, describing him as not being himself and in a state of emotional spiral. While Melvin McClinton Sr. initially survived his self-inflicted gunshot wound, he later died from his injuries. The suspect in the death of Carmelo McClinton was his father, and as a result, no arrests were made in the murder of the young child. In connection with the earlier death of Melvin McClinton Jr., police arrested a 19-year-old who is facing a first-degree murder charge.
