Ramiro Mendez, a 32-year-old father of two, was fatally shot outside his home in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood of Chicago on January 21, 2023. The incident occurred in the early morning hours, around 3 a.m., when Mendez was waiting in the driveway of his house in the 5300 block of West Altgeld Street. He and his wife, Maria Zambrano, had just returned home from a family gathering, and Zambrano had gone inside to let out their dog while Mendez waited outside.
According to witnesses and police reports, a black sedan pulled up in front of the house, and an occupant of the vehicle opened fire, striking Mendez in the chest. Zambrano recalled hearing multiple gunshots followed by the sound of squealing tires as the vehicle fled the scene. When she came out, she found Mendez lying near the backyard fence.
Mendez was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The family and community activists believe the shooting might have been a botched robbery attempt, although Mendez was described as a person who did not have any known conflicts with anyone.
Mendez, an immigrant from the Mexican state of Guerrero, had lived in Chicago for many years. He met his wife in the city and was raising their two young daughters, ages 10 and 7. He worked as a food deliveryman and was known for his dedication to his family, often taking his daughters to and from school.
In response to the tragedy, community activists Raul Montes Jr. and Pat Gibbons offered a combined $8,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the killers. The family and community are urging anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the need for justice and an end to the violence that has affected their neighborhood.
As of the current date, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains open and active. The community continues to seek solutions to the ongoing issue of gun violence, which has had a profound impact on the lives of many, including the family of Ramiro Mendez.
