In the early morning hours of Saturday, June 17, 2023, the quiet of a Milledgeville, Georgia neighborhood was shattered by the discovery of a deceased man. The victim, a 43-year-old White male named Joshua Corey Jones from Eatonton, was found unresponsive between two apartment buildings in the 300 block of Evans Avenue. Law enforcement responded to a 911 call around 8:19 a.m. and upon arrival, determined that Jones had succumbed to a gunshot wound.
The area, located in the Graham Homes/Boddie projects, became an active homicide investigation as detectives from the Milledgeville Police Department began to piece together the events that led to Jones's death.
The investigation quickly led to a suspect, and two days later, on Monday, June 19, 2023, an arrest was made. Thirty-year-old Tavish Nigel Goddard of Milledgeville was taken into custody without incident following a search warrant executed at a residence in the 1100 block of Highland Avenue. Goddard was subsequently charged with a litany of offenses, including malice murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The swift arrest brought a sense of resolution to the initial phase of the investigation, but the community was left to grapple with the violent nature of the crime.
As the legal process unfolded, the motive behind the fatal shooting came to light. The tragic encounter was the result of a drug deal that had taken a deadly turn.
