Valerie Cepeda, a 19-year-old from Hallandale, Florida, tragically lost her life on April 24, 2023, in a violent incident at a luxury resort. The perpetrator was Davon Hilton, the father of her young child, with whom she had a tumultuous relationship.
Hilton and Cepeda had been dating since 2019 but began living separately in mid-2022. Their relationship was marked by repeated instances of domestic violence.
Hilton had been arrested three times on domestic violence charges, and Cepeda had obtained two separate court injunctions against him. In one documented incident, Hilton punched Cepeda and dragged her by the hair while she was holding their child.
On the day of the incident, Hilton shot and killed Cepeda in the valet area of the resort. He also shot her new boyfriend, who survived the attack. Before the shooting, Hilton had been facing ongoing domestic violence charges and had posted bond in January 2023 for charges including burglary and battery related to his violence against Cepeda.
The incident highlights a disturbing trend of escalating domestic violence, with concerns raised about the use of technology to track and stalk victims. Cepeda had expressed her fear and frustration about being constantly monitored and questioned by Hilton, who had threatened her, saying, "If he can’t have me, nobody will."
Following the shooting, Hilton took his own life as U.S. Marshals were about to apprehend him. The tragedy has sparked a broader conversation about domestic violence, with organizations like Women in Distress reporting a significant increase in domestic violence cases in Broward County and emphasizing the need for resources and support to protect victims. A GoFundMe page was set up to cover Cepeda's funeral expenses, a poignant reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence.
