On June 7, 2024, a tragic murder-suicide occurred outside a Chase Bank in the West Kendall area of Miami-Dade County, Florida. Odalys Bancroft, a 43-year-old woman, and her 4-year-old son, Theodore "Teddy" Couto, were fatally shot while in line at the bank's drive-thru ATM.
The incident involved a man in an SUV who pulled up next to Bancroft's minivan and opened fire, killing both her and her son.
The shooter, later identified as 41-year-old Michael Andres Pineda Lozano, was Bancroft's ex-boyfriend. After killing Bancroft and her son, Lozano turned the gun on himself and took his own life.
Bancroft was a dedicated professional, serving as the director of regulatory affairs at Jackson Health System. She had joined the hospital system in 2015, starting as a clinical staff nurse and later assuming leadership roles at Holtz Children’s Hospital. Her son, Teddy, had recently graduated from PreK-4 and was set to turn five the following month.
Family members described Bancroft as kind-hearted and empathetic, and her son as a bright and happy child who brought joy to those around him. The family had been going through a breakup, and Bancroft had recently filed a restraining order against Lozano, although there were no clear signs of the extreme violence that ensued.
The incident was captured on video by a bystander, showing the harrowing moments leading up to the shooting. Witnesses described the scene, with some calling out to police, "They're shooting over there, they're killing." The bank remained closed following the incident, and a GoFundMe page was set up to support the family with funeral expenses.
The community and loved ones are deeply grieving the loss of Bancroft and her son, emphasizing the senseless nature of the tragedy. The boy’s father, Vicente Couto, was present at the scene but did not comment publicly. The family and authorities continue to grapple with the aftermath of this devastating event, highlighting the need for protection and support for women and children against such violent acts.
