On a tragic January day in 2023, the life of Stephen James Stephens, a 21-year-old White male, was violently cut short in Jumping Branch, West Virginia. The series of events that led to his death reportedly began at a pet salon in Beckley. There, an altercation unfolded involving Stephens and a woman who had accompanied him.
Following the initial confrontation, Stephens was forcibly taken from Beckley to the more rural setting of Summers County. His hands were bound, and it was in this secluded area that the violence escalated dramatically. He was ultimately stabbed multiple times and fatally shot. The investigation into the grim discovery pointed to a robbery, potentially linked to a drug debt, as the underlying motive for the brutal crime.
Another man was also found deceased at the scene, though the circumstances of his death remained under investigation.
In the wake of the homicide, law enforcement swiftly identified a suspect. A 26-year-old Beckley man, Kaine William Durham, was arrested and subsequently charged with the murder of Stephen Stephens. He was taken into custody and held without bail at the Southern Regional Jail as the investigation continued.
