On May 12, 2017, 17-year-old Dequal Smiley was shot and killed at the Canopy Creek Apartments on Jacksonville's Northside. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 8:30 a.m. that morning. When they arrived, they found Dequal in the parking lot towards the back of the apartment complex, suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was quickly transported to a hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
