On the evening of the Fourth of July in 2014, a family gathering at Kiwanis Park in Tempe, Arizona, took a tragic turn, culminating in the death of 33-year-old Martin Woods. Following an escalating argument, Martin was shot and later succumbed to his injuries, leaving a family fractured by violence.
The celebration, which had brought relatives together for the holiday, devolved into a heated dispute between Martin and his 37-year-old step-brother, Thomas Woods.
The confrontation escalated to a fatal point when Thomas allegedly produced a firearm and shot Martin. According to police reports, the shooting occurred around 11:15 p.m. While at least one other family member witnessed the altercation, they reported not seeing a weapon in Martin's possession.
After the shooting, authorities were alerted to the fight and a possible gunshot in the park. It is believed that Thomas Woods himself called 911 to report that his brother had been shot. When police arrived, they found both brothers at the scene. Martin Woods was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, but he died from his wounds at approximately 3:30 a.m. on July 5, 2014.
Thomas Woods was taken into custody and subsequently arrested on a charge of second-degree murder. During the initial investigation, he did not admit to shooting his step-brother. Investigators did not recover the murder weapon at the scene, but they did find an empty holster on the driver's seat of Thomas's car, along with a box of ammunition in the driver's side door pocket. Court documents also noted a 'dried red substance,' believed to be blood, on Thomas Woods's shirt. He invoked his right to an attorney and a judge set his bond at $1,000,000. Court records indicated that Thomas Woods had an extensive criminal history, including prior convictions for assault.
