An argument inside a Yuma, Arizona, bar on a February night escalated into deadly violence, cutting short the life of 36-year-old Tyrone Hall. On February 27, 2021, Mr. Hall, a Black / African American male, was at the Maverick Bar when he got into a dispute with another man, Jerome Hall. The conflict moved into the parking lot, where Jerome Hall shot Mr. Hall five times with a 9-millimeter firearm as he chased the unarmed man. Mr. Hall died at the scene.
A woman caught in the crossfire, later identified as Mr. Hall's sister, Vanessa, was also shot and seriously injured.
Police investigating the shooting soon arrested Jerome Hall. Despite sharing a last name, the two men were not related. The Yuma County Attorney’s Office charged Jerome Hall with premeditated first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The trial began in May 2023, more than two years after the shooting. The prosecution argued that Jerome Hall had a calculated plan to commit murder, while the defense claimed he acted in self-defense and in the heat of passion. Mr. Hall's sister, Vanessa, was among the witnesses who took the stand to recount the tragic events of that night.
On June 9, 2023, after just over a day of deliberation, the jury announced its verdict. Unable to reach a consensus on the charge of first-degree murder, which resulted in a hung jury on that count, they found Jerome Hall guilty of the lesser charge of second-degree murder. The jury also convicted him on both counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. On August 29, 2023, a judge sentenced Jerome Hall to 23.5 years in prison: 16 years for the murder, to be followed by a consecutive 7.5-year sentence for the aggravated assault charges.
