Do you know who murdered Tiffany Hatcherson? In the summer of 2015, a promising young female athlete named Tiffany Valiante, aged 18, was on the cusp of a bright future. A recent high school graduate from Mays Landing, New Jersey, she had earned a volleyball scholarship to Mercy College and was eagerly making plans for her life ahead. However, on the evening of July 12th, following an argument with her parents over a friend's debit card, Tiffany walked out of her family home and vanished into the night.
A deer camera captured her walking down the driveway, fully clothed, shortly after 9:28 p.m.
Hours later, in the pre-dawn darkness of July 13th, her life came to a tragic end. Tiffany's body was discovered on a remote stretch of train tracks, nearly four miles from her home. She had been struck by a New Jersey Transit train at approximately 11:12 p.m. When found, she was wearing only her sports bra and underwear, a detail that immediately struck her family as strange and alarming. Within hours of the discovery, authorities ruled her death a suicide, a conclusion that her family has vehemently disputed ever since. They describe Tiffany as a happy and content individual with no history of depression or suicidal thoughts.
The investigation into Tiffany's death was fraught with what her family and their legal team have described as significant irregularities and mishandling of evidence. The initial inquiry was conducted by the New Jersey Transit Police, and a full autopsy was never performed. Crucial evidence, such as testing for a sexual assault, was not conducted. Weeks after her death, Tiffany’s mother found her shoes and headband about a mile and three-quarters from where she was hit by the train, laid out in a way that suggested they had been placed there. An ax with red markings was also found near the scene but later went missing from evidence storage before it could be tested.
To this day, no arrests have been made, and there are no official suspects in what Tiffany's family firmly believes was her murder. They contend that she was likely abducted and that her body was placed on the tracks to stage a suicide. In their pursuit of justice, the family has filed lawsuits to gain access to all the evidence and to have the official manner of death changed from suicide. They have also offered a significant reward for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction of the person or persons they believe are responsible for her death. Despite their persistent efforts and numerous unanswered questions, the case officially remains closed as a suicide, leaving a cloud of mystery and a family's unending search for the truth.
