White/Caucasian male Jack Michael Kern, age 3, died on May 13, 2011, in Ammon, Idaho. In the pre-dawn hours, a neighbor reported a small fire at a home in a quiet neighborhood just east of Idaho Falls. When first responders entered, they found four people shot to death—two young sisters and two children—and a 26-year-old man with a gunshot wound who later died at the hospital.
The children were identified as Jack Michael and his infant brother, Gage, and the women as their mother, Michelle Kern, 22, and her sister, Malinda Kern, 19.
Detectives soon identified the shooter as Gaylin Leirmoe, who had been in a relationship with Michelle Kern and was the father of her two sons. Investigators said Leirmoe set a fire in the basement and then turned the gun on the family before shooting himself. The victims' identities and the date and place of death were later affirmed in local obituaries and memorial records.
No arrests were made. Authorities concluded the case as a murder-suicide, with Leirmoe named as the sole perpetrator responsible for the killings and the fire that drew responders to the home. Public reports and contemporaneous coverage do not indicate any additional suspects.
