In the summer of 2020, the life of 49-year-old Caucasian male Jerry Glass, Jr. of Spokane came to a tragic end in the wooded area near Soldiers Meadow in Nez Perce County, Idaho. On August 4th, his death unfolded after a confrontation with a local cabin owner who had been on alert due to a string of burglaries in the remote region. The events that led to this fatal encounter began a couple of days prior, when Glass led law enforcement on a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle, which he
ultimately crashed and abandoned, disappearing into the rugged landscape of the Waha area.
In the days that followed, reports of cabin break-ins circulated among the property owners of Soldiers Meadow. One of these owners, 57-year-old Darren McCann of Lewiston, decided to check on his and his neighbors' properties. Inside his own cabin, he discovered Glass, who was allegedly in the act of burglarizing the residence. McCann, armed with a gun, took it upon himself to place Glass under a citizen's arrest. His intention was to march Glass down to a location where he could get a cellphone signal to contact the authorities.
The situation escalated when, after proceeding for a short distance down Soldiers Meadow Road, Glass reportedly shoved McCann and made a desperate attempt to flee into the dense woods. In response, McCann fired a warning shot into the ground. When Glass continued to run, McCann fired a second time, the bullet striking Glass in the back and killing him. His body was later discovered by deputies in the nearby bushes.
Following an investigation into the shooting, Darren McCann was arrested and initially charged with second-degree murder for the death of Jerry Glass. However, in a turn of legal events, the charge was later reduced. In May of 2021, McCann reached a plea agreement with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. In September of that same year, he was sentenced to up to one year in the Nez Perce County jail and seven years of probation, bringing a close to the case that ended one man's life and forever altered another's.
