On May 3, 2018, 14-year-old Tyler Talmage, a Caucasian male, was found deceased in his Grand Forks, North Dakota, home alongside his younger siblings, 10-year-old Aiden and 6-year-old Arianna, and their 35-year-old mother, Astra Volk. The tragic discovery was made after officials from the younger children's elementary school requested a welfare check at the residence.
Responding officers found all four family members had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
The investigation that followed determined the incident to be a murder-suicide. Authorities concluded that Astra Volk fatally shot her three children before taking her own life. A handgun was recovered at the scene. In the wake of the events, it was revealed that the family had recently moved into the rental home and that Volk had been facing financial difficulties, including struggles with medical bills. Court records indicated that she had been divorced from the children's father in 2013 and had primary custody.
No arrests were made in the case as the sole suspect was the children's mother, who died at the scene. The investigation did not identify any other suspects. The community mourned the loss of the three young lives, remembering Tyler as a sweet boy who had a love for nature, particularly dinosaurs, and enjoyed caring for his pet guinea pigs.
