In the early morning hours of March 24, 1994, the life of 25-year-old Angela Michelle "Angie" Worsham Cagle, a White/Caucasian female, was tragically cut short in Huntsville, Alabama. Cagle was working the overnight shift as a clerk at a Majik Mart convenience store. Her partially nude body was later discovered by a customer in the store's back storeroom. An autopsy would later reveal that she had been shot twice in the face at close range.
Evidence at the scene suggested a struggle had taken place.
The investigation into Cagle's murder led authorities to Derrick O'Neal Mason. An unidentified informant told police that Mason had committed the crime, describing the. 380-caliber pistol used and stating that Mason was "out of control" and "trying to make a name for himself." This tip led investigators to Mason's car, where they found the murder weapon. Following his arrest on an unrelated warrant, Mason confessed to the killing, admitting that he had gone to the store with the intention of robbing it.
Mason was subsequently convicted of the capital murder of Angela Cagle. Following the jury's recommendation, he was sentenced to death. After years of appeals, Derrick O'Neal Mason was executed by lethal injection on September 22, 2011. Before his execution, Mason apologized to Cagle's family for the pain he had caused.
