In the small town of Hamilton, Alabama, a dispute between former business partners culminated in a tragic loss of life. Donny Miller, a 67-year-old man, was fatally shot on the morning of February 10, 2016. The incident unfolded at a local law firm where Miller was gunned down by his ex-partner in an insulation company.
The assailant, identified as Jimmy Cooper, did not stop his violent rampage after killing Miller.
He proceeded to a nearby accounting firm where he shot and killed 61-year-old Linda Cole. The downtown area of Hamilton was thrown into chaos as law enforcement responded to the active shooter situation. When police confronted Cooper, he reportedly 'was not going to surrender' and was subsequently shot twice by officers. He survived his injuries and was hospitalized.
Investigations into the motive for the shootings suggested a recent business dealing between Cooper and Miller had soured. It also came to light that Cooper had undergone a mental health evaluation the year prior to the incident, following a commitment order signed by a family member. Cooper was later charged with two counts of capital murder.
