In the early morning hours of Friday, October 10, 2008, the life of 40-year-old Delfa Hercules, a female of Salvadoran descent, was tragically cut short in a brutal act of violence in Washington, D.C. A dedicated hotel housekeeper, she was standing at a bus stop in the 1700 block of 3rd Street NW, patiently waiting for the Metrobus that would take her to her job, a routine she likely followed many times before. On this particular morning, however, her quiet wait was shattered by an unknown assailant who not only robbed her of her belongings but also mercilessly stabbed her in the chest.
Grievously wounded, Delfa Hercules displayed immense fortitude as she attempted to make her way back to the safety of her rowhouse, located nearby in the 200 block of Florida Avenue NW. She left a harrowing trail of blood that marked her final, desperate journey from the bus stop to the front of her home. It was there, just steps from her front door, that she finally collapsed from her injuries.
Despite being rushed to a hospital, the single stab wound proved to be fatal, and she was pronounced dead.
The news of her violent death sent shockwaves through her close-knit family. Her husband, Hernan Guevara, and her sister, Rosa Hercules, with whom she lived, were plunged into a state of profound grief. Delfa had immigrated to the United States a decade prior, leaving her young daughter behind in El Salvador in search of a better life. Her sister remembered her as a vibrant and joyful person who cherished life, finding happiness in simple pleasures like going out with her husband and watching planes at the airport.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide and Sexual Offenses Branch immediately launched an investigation into the robbery and homicide. They canvassed the neighborhood, seeking any information that could lead to the perpetrator. A reward of up to $25,000 was offered for any information that would result in the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Delfa Hercules's murder. Despite their efforts and public appeals for assistance, the case grew cold. To this day, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with her senseless death, leaving her family with unanswered questions and a wound that may never fully heal. The case of Delfa Hercules remains an unsolved homicide, a somber reminder of a life taken too soon.
