In the summer of 2019, the life of 18-year-old Elexis Lashelle McCool was tragically cut short in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. A recent graduate of Northridge High School, the young Black woman was known for her sweet and kind nature, always wearing a smile that brought joy to those around her. Her vibrant personality left a lasting impact on her friends, family, and the wider community.
On the evening of June 9, 2019, Elexis was driving her SUV with two teenage brothers, aged 14 and 15. The younger of the two was recklessly firing a gun out of the car window when a bullet tragically struck Elexis through the driver's seat. After she was shot, she managed to pull the vehicle over before losing consciousness. The two teenagers then moved her to the back seat and drove to the western part of Tuscaloosa.
Realizing that Elexis had succumbed to her injuries, the boys took her phone and identification, locked the car, and discarded the keys, abandoning her body inside the vehicle. Her body was discovered by authorities in the abandoned SUV.
An investigation swiftly led to the identification and arrest of the two brothers. The 14-year-old was charged with murder for firing the fatal shot. His 15-year-old brother faced charges of theft, obstruction, and abuse of a corpse. Both were taken to the Tuscaloosa Juvenile Detention Center. The senseless death of Elexis McCool prompted the city of Tuscaloosa to reinforce its juvenile curfew laws in an effort to prevent similar tragedies.
